Robert Hunt Veolia Environmental Services’ Executive Director said ‘This is a major step forward in delivering a long term waste management solution for Leeds. We firmly believe that the proposed facility at Cross Green offers the right location and the right technology for the city.”
The installation of the hi-tech recycling and energy recovery facility will save Leeds City Council an estimated £200 million over the term of its contract compared with the cost of landfilling its residual municipal waste.
The Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility is designed to remove recyclable waste from black bins and recover energy from what is left over. The remaining household waste will be used as a fuel to generate energy which will be used on the National Grid to power up to 20,000 homes.
Mr Hunt added “Our primary aim is to minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill – a response to both cost and environmental pressures.
The construction and operation of a single well-located facility offers the best financial and environmental solution for the local authority and the local taxpayer.”
Veolia are confident that the facility will provide a welcome boost to the local economy and generate jobs for Leeds residents. Around three hundred temporary jobs will be created during the construction of the facility and 45 permanent posts – both technical and non-technical. There will also be opportunities for apprenticeships, work placements and work experience schemes.
