Key features of the Leeds recycling and energy recovery facility
- The main building stands approximately 42m high, just shy of the 52m Leeds Civic Hall, and features a slimline 75m chimney.
- Designed as a positive landmark for the Aire Valley region and Cross Green Industrial Estate, the building uses innovative glass and timber framing.
- A green ‘living’ wall on the southern façade enhances the visual impact and provides a home for biodiversity. It is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
- The visitor centre offers an opportunity to learn about the facility and waste recycling in Leeds.
- The internationally renowned architect Jean-Robert Mazaud of S’pace Architects, known for iconic UK recycling and waste buildings, designed the facility.
The design principles focus on creating a functional, efficient, and iconic building with a positive identity. We worked closely with Leeds City Council to deliver a high-quality design that integrates sustainability throughout, including rainwater harvesting, timber use, and extensive landscaping to support biodiversity. Safety and security are built into every aspect of the design.
We follow the National Building Specification for materials and workmanship, ensuring industry-leading standards for the architectural, civil and building works.
